Turner

I had already texted Poppy, like, five times, and she had yet to respond. But since it was my house, I couldn’t very well leave to go check on Poppy, even though that was exactly what my feet were itching to do.

This would be a game-changer for her.

I could feel it in my heart.

She had already been worried, and now, being the woman of the grill at the moment it somehow caught our fence on fire, in front of a bunch of people she didn’t know, she would stay holed up in that house of hers.

I couldn’t let that happen.

The more time ticked on and the fire department took their slow-ass time, I was running the risk of already losing her.

Finally, one firefighter said, “We’re good here. I’d pull the grill farther away from the fence.”

I raised my eyebrows. What’s left of it. “Thanks,” I mumbled.

The second the fire truck pulled away, I turned to the few friends who had stuck around. Alan, Larry, Tim, and Jared had already left. Just my cousins and Drew and Mandi were there. Mandi was cleaning off the table and throwing stuff in the trash bin.

Ray looked guilty as hell. “Sorry, dude. I thought she knew what she was doing.”

“Knew what she was doing?” I stalked up to Ray and grabbed him by the shirt. “Mandi told me what happened. You fucking pussed out without even asking if Poppy could manage it.”

I pushed him back as I let go of his shirt. I grabbed my phone and walked around my house to Poppy’s front door, ignoring the droves of peoples standing in front of my house and across the street. A fire was obviously a big deal in Shady Winds.

“No one was hurt. Small grill fire,” I yelled to my neighbors before getting to Poppy’s door.

I knocked.

No answer.

I knocked again. Louder.

Nothing.

“Poppy?” I yelled.

I sent her a text. I’m here. Please let me in.

Ping.

Poppy: Go away

“Fuck that.”

I texted back. I’m not leaving. Let me in.

Poppy: I made a fool of myself.

Me: It was just an accident. Could have happened to anyone.

Poppy: But it didn’t. It happened to me. This is exactly why I stay home.

Poppy: Alone.

Me: No one even cares about the fire.

Poppy: Look behind you.

I glanced over my shoulder to find our block still filled with half of the neighborhood’s residents standing partway in the street and on the sidewalk across the street. There had to be at least twenty-five people milling around, even though the fire truck was gone.

“Fuck.” I shoved my phone into my pocket and went out to the street.

“Hey, Turner, everything okay? Was it just your fence?”

“How did that happen?”

“We knew you were hot, but we didn’t know you were that hot!”

“What was Poppy doing over there? We saw her run.”

“I can bring you a casserole over for dinner tonight, if you need some company.”

I glanced around at the women who wouldn’t shut up and the few parents who were with their kids. “It’s all good. I don’t need anything. Everything will be fine.
